Lexical Relations
Lexical relations are relations between items in the lexicon. The lexicon is a mental contruction. The traditional definition of lexicon is a list of the words in a language along with salient information about each lexical item, also called a lexeme (as in a dictionary). Phrasal verbs and idioms are considered to be lexemes, that is, they are entered into the lexicon as more than just the sum of their parts. The lexicon is organized into lexical fields, which are groups of related words or words that belong to specialized knowledge or activities, for example, Medicine. Since a lexeme can be involved in a number of different lexical relations at the same time, it is better to think of the lexicon as a network, rather than a list of words.
